Miniature Interview
Franka Potente and Benno Furmann
(2000)
These two were awesome. They smoked through the whole interview. It was a roundtable style interview, meaning five "journalists" were present. Roundtables generally suck. The year was, 2000, and the pair were junketing press for Der Krieger und die Kaiserin. The film's director, Tom Tykwer (at the time Potente's boyfriend) was not present. I don't recall the name of the fellow who asked the question below and then opened a sack full of mmmmhmmm. This was in Denver, so let's assume he writes for the republican-backed paper.
So his (Tykwer) technique is not to improvise on the set.
BF: He gives you a lot of space but then again at the same time, he has a very clear and strong vision. One of the other great things about Tom is that he's so incredibly open-
mmmmhmmm
-and willing to follow along with what you have to offer. He loves his actors and picks his actors very carefully. And what's clear is the beginning and ending of a scene, what's in between, we're going to find out ourselves, now! Let's just do it.
mmmmmhmmmm
We've talked about it now let's just try. Let's try it like this, let's try it like that.
mmmhmmm
FP: But he wants the lines though, he doesn't let you drop the lines.
mmmmhmmm
That's true. He's very precise about that
And we rehearsed for two weeks.
mmmhmm
Before we started the shooting, every cast member and crew-
mmhmm
had come--we'd rented a movie theatre--and there's this really great documentary on patients in insane asylums.
mmMMM
-and it's-
mmmhm
-really great. Itâ¤s different cases and different mental diseases and what not. And we all watched it.
MMMHMM
And then he invited staff that works there, and nurses and we could ask any question-
mmmmmmhm
it was really interesting. And even funny sometimes.
